As word continues to spread about music’s unique benefits for persons living with dementia, how do we reach everyone who might benefit? The Engaged Brains Project is a community-wide, person-centered initiative, transforming dementia care in Moore County, N.C.
Led by Neuropsychologist Karen D. Sullivan, PhD, ABPP, and 60 community leaders (certified in Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care), the project focuses on a year-long public training program grounded in “radical engagement” to enhance dementia knowledge, care skills, and support, to drive meaningful culture change. Goals include reducing stigma, improving access to early diagnosis, and training all care providers in person-centered care. This effort is supported by the Reid Healthcare Transformation Fellowship from The Foundation of FirstHealth.
On January 16, two free screenings of Alive Inside at the Sunrise Theater in Southern Pines, N.C., will help raise awareness for the music component of their effort. I’m pleased to be a discussion panel participant (remotely) at the event. Learn more about this well-integrated model here.
